Avocados are hitting the health headlines. You can’t open instagram without being bombarded by feeds full of amazing avocado based snacks and meals.
And the latest craze… avocado restaurants and cafes! So what is it, about this versatile fruit, that’s sent everyone into avocado overdrive?
First off, it has to be the avocados creamy texture and mild flavour. Add to that it’s fantastic nutritional qualities and health benefits and we can see why the avo is big news. There are also over a dozen avocado varieties to choose from. Each in varying shapes, textures and colours. Although the most popular varieties tend to be the knobbly skinned Hass and the bright green smooth-skinned Fuerte.
Avos are an excellent source of monounsaturated fats and vitamin E. Yes, they are high in fats, hence that fabulous creamy taste, but good fats. Even so, if you’re following our FAT LOSS plan, we recommend you limit your intake to 2 avocados a week.
These green beauties also contain more soluble fibre than any other fruit. They also contain iron, copper, potassium, vitamin B and folate.
Blitz them up in a smoothie with bananas. Mash them over wholemeal toast, add a poached egg and a dash of sweet chili sauce. Slice one up, sprinkle with chili flakes and sea salt and devour. Or, our favourite, make a big bowl of guacamole (recipe below) and dollop over our breakfast burritos!
